Several local businesses set up booths at the Committee of 100's "Welcome Newcomers and Students" fair held Wednesday night at the community center on Falcon Road. The Committee of 100 is sponsored by the Altus Chamber of Commerce.
The fair offers information for newcomers to AAFB, as well as plenty of free stuff, door prizes and a free barbecue dinner, catered by Roy's BBQ, in Hobart. Families enjoyed visiting with each other and obtaining loads of useful information from business representatives.
The Committee of 100 holds a fair every quarter for newcomers -- rotating each fair to a different site. The next fair will be held at Western Oklahoma State College
Representatives from Sen. Jim Inhofe's office were also at the fair. The crowd was told that Inhofe was in Altus, reportedly for a very brief visit with a local acquaintance.
Col. Dave Miller said not only were they recognizing newcomers, but they also wanted to recognize deployed troops coming home from Iraq. By September, he said another 250 troops from the 97th Air Mobility Wing will be deployed overseas.
Miller and family, who have lived in Altus for about a year, told newcomers that the warmth they felt at the fair would be extended by the businesses in Altus.
