Rodeo gets under way with Military Night this evening

ALTUS -- It's rodeo time in Altus!

The 27th annual Great Plains Stampede Rodeo in Altus will give rodeo fans in the area an opportunity they might not ordinarily have. It's a chance to see some of the country's best cowboys.

Three performances are set for 8 p.m. today, Friday and Saturday.

Besides the pro cowboys and cowgirls, the Great Plains Stampede will also feature bullfighter/clown Dusty Essick of Highlandville, Mo., who was a Copenhagen Cup Finalist as a in 2001; bullfighter/clown Lance Britton, world champion in 1999 and barrelman Ted Kimzey, the 14-time NFR barrelman and PRCA Clown of the Year in 1986 from Strong City.

Calling the action here for the 10th year will be PRCA rodeo announcer Charley Throckmorton of Burleson, Texas.

Special activities are also slated during the three-day event.

Thursday is Military Night at the rodeo. Ticketholders will be treated to an old-fashioned chuckwagon barbecue from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. prior to the first rodeo performance at 8 p.m.

Friday is Kids Night. Special events will include an elementary school tug of war, heifer dressing and donkey bustin'.

The grand finale will be at 8 p.m. Saturday. It will include a donkey bustin' and a calf scramble for the kids. Other special activities being held in conjunction with the rodeo on Saturday will be the Longhorn Cattle Drive and Parade at 1 p.m. through downtown Altus.
