van that struck a power pole Monday afternoon, shorting out the control box for the traffic light at the intersection of Simpson and North Main.

According to Altus Police Chief Mike Patterson, a 2000 Ford Astrovan driven by Sandra Hale of Wellington, Texas, followed a car driven by her brother through the traffic light which witnesses say had turned red.

Her van struck a 1992 Pontiac driven by Henry Haynie as it was crossing Main eastbound on Simpson. The van struck Haynie's car on the right front. The van then careened into the power pole.

Patterson said it may be days before the replacement parts to fix the signal are installed and that tests will have to be run to determine whether the underground sensors were also shorted out.

Hale was transported to Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Haynie received a laceration to the forehead, but declined medical attention.
