ALTUS -- Local artist, Sue Messerly is exhibiting her paintings at the Altus Library during the month of November. She has more than 40 paintings on display, most of which are for sale. The majority of her paintings are scenes of the local area - Altus and the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.

Messerly grew up all over the world, being in an Air Force family and attended high school in England. When she was college age she began painting, but put it aside later while she raised her two children - Amy Messerly, who lives in Houston, Texas, and Paul Messerly, who lives now in Los Angeles.

Messerly and her husband Al have been residents of Altus for the past 25 years. Al retired from Altus Air Force Base and they decided to stay in the Altus area. She began painting again five or six years ago.

The couple enjoys camping and hiking in the wildlife refuge and photographing scenes which she uses in her paintings.

She majored in fine art at Colorado University and at North Texas State University. She has also attended workshops with Ben Konis, Tony Couch, and Rick McClure.

Messerly has notecards featuring her paintings for sale at the Museum of the Western Prairie and the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge Visitors' Center. She also has prints available for sale of all of her painting.

Her paintings can also be seen by appointment at her home or can be viewed at the library throughout the month of November.
