Gabriel Vernon, director of Studio One dancers, attended the meeting to address the board on this issue. During a recent junior high football game half-time, the dancers performed and then someone received a complaint on the matter.
Assistant Superintendent Bruce May and Superintendent Bob Drury advised the board that according to the Oklahoma State School Board Association, schools could not discriminate between outside organizations, therefore they needed to be extremely careful about letting any organization perform at school functions. The board decided it needed to come up with a policy concerning the issue and it was tabled for further discussion at the regular meeting in December. The board agreed that a policy should be drafted before the January meeting.
Rebecca York, director of curriculum, and Mike Garman, 10th grade English teacher, also addressed the board on the recently received Adequate Yearly Progress Report for the high school. Garman advised the board that a plan was currently being implemented in the English Department to help try to raise scores, and the idea of offering incentives for passing students would be discussed in the future.
The board also decided to approve the hiring of one additional security officer to be stationed at the high school, but not limited to that site. This would also probably require the purchasing of another vehicle to be used by this security officer.
Other decisions concerning the removal of portable buildings at all sites and the hiring of GBA Architects, Jim Atkinson, were also approved with a 3 to 2 vote. Atkinson has been give the go-ahead to start coming up with plans on future building projects. Ford Roofing was also selected to do necessary repairs to the high school cafeteria flat roof.
