The 2005 "Grate" Spelling Bee will be Saturday, April 2, at the Altus High School Library. Books of the spelling words will be distributed when the team entry fee is given to the Great Plains Literacy Council at the Southern Prairie Library System at Altus or at Hollis. A house fire destroyed the home of the Donnie Bearden family and a fund has been set up at the First State Bank in Altus. Everything was lost. The family had had a baby shower on the previous Saturday and all of the items burned. If items are being donated they can be dropped off at Vera Bearden at 1723 N. Crain or call 482-2499.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4876 Ladies Auxiliary is sponsoring its annual Young American Creative Patriotic Art Award Contest. The information is being sent to the art department at the schools, but we would like to offer this to any home school student. The American Red Cross is currently taking enrollment for a Professional CPR class to be held on Dec. 2. Please call the chapter at 580-482-5303 for further information and to sign up.

The Salvation Army is seeking sponsors for needy children on the Christmas Angel Tree this year. Sponsors are needed to provide gifts to underprivileged children in the community. Angel Trees are located at Wal-Mart, Atwood's and J.C. Penny in Altus. Corporate/church sponsors should call Captain Annette Parker at 482-8577 to sponsor multiple "Angels".

Red River Federal Credit Union, 2121 N. Main, will host an exhibit on the history of U.S. currency, featuring historic notes and coins on loan from the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. The display is available for viewing until Dec. 17 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday - Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday.

Marine Toy for Tots Foundation will be collecting new unwrapped toys through Dec. 24 and will remain in our area. Monetary donations will also be collected at the local branch through Dec. 24. If any wants to make a donations they can stop by First American Cash Advance or Check Advance, 118 N. Main, between the hours of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday - Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. Prince of Peace Catholic Church will be having a burrito breakfast starting at 8:30 a.m. Sunday. Also, starting at 11 a.m., an Enchilada Plate Dinner will be sold. We are inviting the entire community to come and join us. All proceeds will go toward Our Lady of Guadalupe celebration on Dec. 12. The celebration will start with a procession at 10:30 a.m. and then a Mass. After the Mass, free food, dances and a lot of fun for everyone at the community center on Falcon Road.

WOSC Community Chorus will present the 24th annual performance of George Frederick Handel's "The Messiah" at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Herschal H. Crow Fine Arts Auditorium. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students. Group rates are also available. Guest conductor is Nathaniel Stine, Durham, NC. Guest soprano is Suzanne Hillis Ackin, Kansas City; alto is Patti Drennin, Norman; bass is Jonathan Stewart of SWOSU in Weatherford. Guest tenor is Altus High School graduate Andy Biddy.

CASA's regularly scheduled monthly board meeting will be held Monday at Western Oklahoma State College.

Jackson County Memorial Hospital Authority, Board of Trustees Meeting, will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday at conference room in the old part of the building.

The American Red Cross is currently taking enrollment for an Adult CPR/AED review class to be held the Monday evening. This class is for people holding current Adult CPR/AED certifications or certifications that have been expired less than one month. DAV and DAVA will meet Tuesday at 6 p.m. for supper and at 6:30 p.m. for the meeting at the Towers.

The Warren Senior Citizens/Community will be having their regular Tuesday music night at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Located 7 miles east of Blair on Highway 19. They will be selling hamburgers with chips for $1.50, pop for .50˘. All coffee, tea and desserts are free.

The Rotary Club will meet at noon on Tuesday at WOSC. The rotarian of the day is Jimmy Carrick . The program is being presented by Dennis Marsh, General Manager of the Harmon County Dairy. He will explain the daily operations of a commercial dairy as well discuss it's economic impact to Harmon County and surrounding areas.

Potential exhibitors have plenty of time to gear up and round em' up for the 18th annual Wichita Mountains Classic show that will be held Dec. 4 and 5 at the Great Plains Coliseum. Barns open at 8 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 3. The deadline for entries to this yearly steer and heifer show is Nov. 23. An additional fee will be charged for late entries. Altus Gymnastics Academy Inc. is offering "Parents Day of Shopping" from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. Friday at 1117 N. Jackson. This will be an organized, fun filled day for the children while the parents enjoy a day of shopping. Children will need to bring a sack lunch, pizza will be provided for supper. St. Paul's Episcopal Church and Our Savior Lutheran Church will have a Chili Supper following the Altus Christmas Parade from 4 to 6:30 p.m Sunday, Dec. 5. Altus '24th Annual Altus Christmas Parade will be at 3 p.m. Dec. 5. The theme for this year's parade is "Christmas in Our Town." Clubs, organizations, schools, musical groups, churches, businesses and individuals are planning to participate in the parade. Prizes are awarded for floats in five categories. The 10th annual Jackson County Memorial Hospital Hospice "Light Up A Life" Celebration will be Monday, Dec. 6. The tree lighting ceremony will be at 6:30 p.m. in front of the JCMH main entrance with the lighting of the Hospice Holiday Tree. The evening continues at 7 p.m. with the Candlelight Ceremony at the Altus High School Cafeteria. Each honored name will be read aloud during the candlelight ceremony. Tax-deductible donations to JCMH Hospice provide care to the terminally ill in Jackson, Tillman, Kiowa, Greer, and Harmon counties. For more information call (580) 481-2320.
