"Things start around 11 a.m. with Santa Claus who will be there until around 1 p.m. taking pictures and visiting with kids," said Main Street Altus Director Lindsey Galloway. "At 1 p.m. there will be live performances on stage from various local groups. The Country Bandits will also be on hand to perform, and at 3 p.m. we will start the drawings,"
If last year is any indication, there will be 10,000 people waiting for their chance at the $10,000 or one of the other prizes.
Candy Cane Cash is a promotion in which local merchants give tickets to customers. A large hopper will be positioned on the stage on the west side of the county courthouse holding tickets with numbers corresponding to the tickets handed to customers. The person holding the ticket number drawn then has six minutes to make it to the stage.
A $1,000 drawing will be held at 3 p.m. and then drawings for $100 will be held every ten minutes leading up to the $10,000 drawing at 4 p.m.
Winners must be present and must be 18 years of age and have a valid ID and proof of employment if applicable.
Shoppers can collect tickets up until time for the drawing.
"It's going to be a great day," Galloway said. " We have some wonderful entertainment lined up as well as great food vendors, so I would encourage everyone to finish their shopping and head downtown."
According to Altus Police Chief Mike Patterson, it is the largest crowd in Altus every year. As the crowd grows during the day on Saturday, barricades will be set up blocking Hudson and Commerce. Traffic should be able to continue to flow on Broadway and Main Street, he said.
There will be a final $1,000 drawing at the Main Street Altus office at 9 a.m. Monday. The winner does not have to be present at that drawing, Galloway said.
If the winning ticket of any of the cash prizes was obtained at the Altus Times office, the Times will award an additional $100 and a free year's subscription.
