ALTUS -- Although no one was seriously injured, the Altus Police Department is temporarily down one cruiser after a police car was badly damaged in a Wednesday night collision on North Main.

According to Police Chief Mike Patterson, a police cruiser with lights and sirens on was responding to a call for assistance on a traffic stop when a 1991 Chevy S-10 pickup driven by 27-year-old Shanna Williams pulled out of the Bunker Hill United parking lot and struck the police car in the side. The police car was driven by Officer Thomas Hobbs.

"Our preliminary investigation shows that she had a case of beer in the car with one can open," Patterson said. Williams was taken to Jackson County Memorial Hospital, where she was treated and released, then booked into Jackson County Jail this morning.

She is being charged with failure to yield, carrying an open container and DUI. Blood was drawn and will be analyzed for alcohol content.

Patterson said Hobbs appeared to be OK after the accident and was taken to the emergency room to be checked out as a precaution.

Patterson said that with more than 20 cars in the police fleet, the loss of the cruiser will not have a drastic effect on the department. The vehicle is insured by the city and will be replaced or repaired.
