ALTUS -- City Council member Sid Willis is the only Altus City Council member being challenged for his seat in the nonpartisan general municipal election set for April 5.

David Camarillo, 28, an assistant manager at La Hacienda Restaurant, will vie against Willis to represent Ward 2.

Chris E. Kliewer, a teacher, had filed for the Ward 1 seat held by Bobby Richardson but withdrew his candidacy this morning, according to officials at the Board of Elections.

The Ward 2 race is for a two-year unexpired term.

Councilman Rick Steen, who had said in January that he intended to file for the remaining two years in Ward 4, opted not to file after all.

Steen, who has served two full terms, explained that his schedule is plenty full, what with two teenage daughters -- both basketball players -- and his position as Jackson County director of the state Department of Human Services.

"That's what finally made the decision for me," he said.

Also, Steen said, the family is planning to move into a different ward in the city soon, and he felt that slamming the city with a $5,000 bill to hold another election would not be the right thing to do. "It's not about me," he said.

Topping the list of council successes during his eight years, Steen said, was the decision to hire Mike Nettles as the city administrator -- "one of the best decisions we have ever made."

Also among successes Steen counts the completion of the bypass and the new reverse osmosis water treatment plant.

With the race for mayor coming up in another two years, Steen may just throw his hat in the ring. "I never say never," he said. "I might consider doing that."

As for his successor in the Ward 4 seat, Don Johnson, Steen said, "I've known Don for a long time ... I wish him the best."

Johnson, who served as the city's mayor for a year and a half before resigning during a city council meeting in August 1997, will automatically move into the seat.

Retaining seats on the council that were up for re-election are Robert Beers, for another four years in Ward 2; Donald Jouett, four more years in Ward 3; and Dean Garrett, four more years in Ward 4.

Seats that were not up for re-election are those held by Jerry Don Henry, Ward 1; and Peggy Risinger, Ward 3.
