The funding will be used to complete the Altus Navajoe Gateway Project, which would make improvements to U.S. Highway 62 through downtown Altus to improve traffic flow, encourage commercial redevelopment, and increase pedestrian access and safety. The funding would be used to reconstruct curbs and sidewalks, improve handicapped access, and provide street lighting as well as landscaping.
"This project will not only make downtown Altus more beautiful, it will help encourage new businesses to locate in the downtown area," Lucas said. "And it will increase safety for drivers and pedestrians. ... This is the main east-west artery through Altus, so it's important that the community makes the best impression possible for travelers on this road."
The first three phases of the project have already been funded, and this funding would go toward the final phase of the project.
The House passed the legislation, the Transportation Equity Act, today by a vote of 417 to 9. The legislation would provide $284 billion in federal highway, transit and road safety projects through 2009. It will go next to the Senate for a vote.
