Angela Leigh Biddy, of 1100 Ranch Road, died around noon at Jackson County Memorial Hospital, according to Sheriff Morris Roberts.
Roberts said Biddy was seen Thursday by a visiting doctor who said he was concerned about her left eye, that it was glazed and "it looked like she was going blind."
Biddy was taken to Jackson County Memorial Hospital that night. Roberts said that the sheriff's department has an agreement with the hospital to bring inmates for treatment after 11 p.m. when the hospital is less busy.
"While she was there she got ill, Roberts said. "They put her in ICU. That is where she passed away."
Roberts cited medical confidentiality laws in declining to say with what medications she was being treated.
The sheriff's office booking sheet showed no medications were on her when she was taken into custody.
Biddy's death, as with all inmate deaths, will be investigated by the Jail Inspector's Office. State Jail Inspector Don Garrison said that he had not begun the investigation, but he expects to know more within the next couple of days.
Roberts said he did not know the cause of death, and information was not available from JCMH by press time today. As he understood it, Roberts said, "Her system just more or less shut down."
Biddy was arrested at 12:54 a.m. March 1 on charges of possession of a controlled dangerous substance after former conviction, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and driving under suspension -- charges for which she appeared initially on the same day. On Wednesday she appeared before Special Judge Suzanne Mollison on an application to revoke a suspended sentence she had received earlier for unlawful possession of a controlled drug.
