How do you see the Altus Comprehensive Plan 2025 developing? What do you see as priority projects and how will you work to implement them?
Altus was very fortunate when it obtained the necessary government funding to write the 2025 comprehensive plan. Around $100,000 and countless hours were consumed in writing the plan that will carry Altus well into the 21st century. I believe that it would be not only irresponsible to the taxpayers of today but also tragic to the generations of tomorrow if the Altus City Council does not put forth a concerted effort to develop Altus into the vision defined by the 2025 comprehensive plan. The quality of life will be greatly improved when the parks of Altus are upgraded and added to, when bicyclists and pedestrians have their own areas out of harm's way from motorists, and when jobs are abundant so that our sons and daughters can stay in Altus and enjoy the quality of life that they grew up with. For these reasons, among others, I desire to work to my fullest ability while on the council in order to see that the 2025 Comprehensive Plan is carried out.
What do you feel are Altus' options in the worst case scenario that Altus Air Force Base is closed in the BRAC process? What can Altus do to prepare in case the base expands?
As all Altus citizens are doing, I am holding my breath until may 16th, when BRAC will release the list of proposed base closures. I am very confident, by all indications available, that the Altus Air Force Base will remain open. But if for some unthinkable reason the base closes, Altus will have to make due with the resources that we have to rebuild and go forward. That's why as your councilman, I will work hard to improve Altus no matter what BRAC decides.
How do you stand on the pit bull and excessive noise ordinances?
Regarding pit bulls, I believe that as responsible citizens all pet owners, not only pit bull owners, need to take it upon themselves to see that their pet never becomes a danger to the community. Currently, the city council is reviewing this problem, and as a member of the council I will work hard to see that we adopt a policy that is not only fair to owners of pit bulls but that also ensures a safer community.
As for the noise ordinance, I believe that the council needs to continue to work cooperatively to find a solution that will not only help alleviate the annoyance of excessive sounds in our otherwise peaceful community, but one that is also enforceable. What we don't need is a policy that means well but accomplishes nothing. As your councilman, I will put forth my best effort to accomplish this task.
Why do you think you're qualified to be a member of the Altus City Council?
I believe that I am qualified to serve as your councilman for several reasons.
First of all, I have lived in Altus for almost all of my life. I grew up here, attended public school here and graduated here. I know Altus firsthand. I know the people here, I want to live my life here, hopefully raise a family here and retire here. I want nothing but what is best for Altus America.
Next, I have grown up in a small business. I know what it takes to successfully manage people and resources. I know the challenges that confront a business on a day-to-day basis. And I believe that there is no other business of more importance than government, the people's business. As a council member I will help manage the taxpayers' money with the same diligence that I manage my family's resources every day.
Finally, I have worked hard during this campaign to learn all that I can about Altus. I've knocked on doors in every neighborhood, I've attended dozens of meetings and social functions, the school board and city council proceedings. I have a good understanding of the community around me and what makes it tick. As your councilman I will apply all the things that I've learned along the way to serve you to the fullest.
Over the years, Altus has completed a host of project and community improvements. Imagination Station is a great example of this. The citizens of Altus, along with the city government, came together to create a place for our children to be safe while having fun. As your councilman I will work hard to see that the people of Altus work together to further the future of Altus.
