ALTUS -- A Headrick man who was paroled from the state Department of Corrections less than a year ago found himself jailed Tuesday morning on drug, firearm and assault charges and facing a possible return to prison.

Charles Randy Romines, 41, of Headrick, was arrested on a warrant and booked into the Jackson County Jail at 7:55 a.m., charged with possession of firearms after conviction or during probation, unlawful possession of a controlled drug (marijuana) with intent to distribute, and domestic assault and battery.

Romines' bond was set at $50,000.

According to an affidavit filed in District Court, at about 3:15 p.m. on March 28 a woman came to the Altus Probation and Parole Office asking to speak with someone about Romines. The woman appeared to be in pain, was nervous and said she was afraid for her life. She was wearing a rib brace and had an emergency room report with her. She said that on March 26 Romines had assaulted her and "broke out his dad's semi-automatic gun" and threatened to kill her and himself.

Later, the woman wrote a statement about the assault and the gun and told a probation officer that Romines and his father, Charles Ray Romines, had some 30 pounds of marijuana, but that they had sold all but 13 pounds of it. She said the pot was wrapped, soaked in oil and then wrapped again to cover its scent. She also told the officer where the "machine gun" could be found at the Romines' trailer house four miles east of Altus on U.S. Highway 62 at "Duck's Corner."

Romines had been released from the DOC in May 2004 after serving time on convictions for unlawful possession of a controlled drug in September 2000 and manufacture of a controlled dangerous substance in October 2002. He received a 10-year sentence for the manufacturing charge, five of which were suspended, and five years for the possession charge, to run concurrently. He was scheduled to be discharged from parole June 12.

Three parole officers went to the Romines residence and spoke with the father, Charles Ray, who consented to a search of the house. In the rear bedroom, the officers found a plywood box secured with a combination lock, and in Charles Ray's bedroom they found a loaded Intratech-9 semiautomatic handgun with the serial number scratched off in a dresser drawer and an unloaded Mac 90 semiautomatic rifle with a 30-round magazine under the bed.

When the plywood box was opened, the officers discovered about 10 pounds of marijuana wrapped in five individual packages, as well as a set of digital scales and miscellaneous bags.

A preliminary hearing conference for Charles Randy Romines is set for May 11.
