Don't take Albert seriously

Sometimes peoples reactions to opinions sports commentators fascinate me.

Say something bad about someone's team and switchboard's to local sports talk shows light up.

That was the case in Oklahoma this week thanks to ESPN's Trev Alberts.

Alberts got under the skin of some OU fans when he called the Sooners one of the top five most overrated teams of 2005. He also did not include Adrian Peterson on his list of the top five Heisman Trophy candidates.

Alberts pointed to OU struggles in the last two national championship games and the absence of Jason White. "Expect the Sooners to come back to reality with a three-loss season," Alberts said.

His top five Heisman candidates included USC's Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush, Michigan quarterback Chad Henne, Texas signal caller Vincent Young and Tennessee running back Gerald Riggs. But not Peterson. because Albert goes back to the absence of White and he says defenses will be geared to stop the running back who finished second in last year's Heisman balloting.

"This is a numbers game and he won't have the yards," Alberts said.

Oklahoma fans as expected called WWLS radio, many wanting to know why Alberts hates OU.

This isn't the first time the Sooners faithful complained about a commentator and I'm sure it's not going to be the last time.

I don't know that Alberts dislikes OU as much as he does Sooners coach Bob Stoops.

It all started last year after the OU-Nebraska game. The Sooners leading 30-0 in the final minutes were throwing the ball into the end zone trying to add another touchdown trying to impress the BCS polls. There is no question that Stoops was trying to run up the score. He admitted as much after the game. He also said should have done the gentlemanly thing and just run out the clock.

Alberts, who played football at Nebraska, called Stoops "classless." Stoops retaliated saying ESPN had an agenda in trying to get Auburn into the national championship game.

Alberts called Stoops statements ridiculous, saying ESPN has never had an agenda anytime and demanded an apology from the coach.

Obviously that apology never came. ESPN does carry several Southeastern Conference games but I don't know if they and Alberts had an agenda in getting Auburn into that national championship.

I do know one thing. Television networks have agendas. ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN all slant their news coverage and ESPN is no different. Albert's statement that the network does not or never has had an agenda is dead wrong.

Just look back one year when White won the Heisman Trophy. In the weeks prior to the due date of the ballots, ESPN repeatedly ran clips of Pittsburgh's Larry Fitzgerald and that was no coincidence. ESPN has contract with the Big East Conference in which Pittsburgh is a member There was no question they campaigned to get Fitzgerald the Heisman award. An obvious agenda.

I don't know how Albert's predictions are going to play out. I don't believe OU will be playing for a national championship this year, but I do believe they will be a good football team.

Oklahoma will be favored to win every game except Texas My guess is they finish 10-1 or 9-2 and Peterson will be one of the top five vote getters in the Heisman voting.

If Albert does hate OU that much and it is clouding his judgment, then he is making a gross mistake. I have a tough time believing that. One would think a national commentator would want to be accurate in his predictions and he truly believes what he is saying.

This is just an opinion of one college football analyst. We all make predictions in this business. Some are right, some will be wrong.

OU fans chill out. Your team will have an opportunity to prove him wrong. And if he is wrong, you will have the chance to call the sports talks show to rip him, chastise, him, insult him or e-mail him so you can tell him what you think of him.
