The 97th Medical Group recently received a rating of outstanding along with an accreditation following two inspections last week. The two inspections are given at least every three years.
Health Services Inspection, the Air Force inspection agency which gave the Medical Group a rating of outstanding, assessed readiness, provided an independent assessment of medical care, identified instances of fraud waste or abuse and evaluated and reported on the effectiveness and efficiency of medical management, said Carolyn Johnson, the project officer for the inspections.
The inspection agency looked at a total of 16 Medical Group areas such as public health, life skills, aerospace medicine, behavioral health and several others.
The outstanding rating was based on a numerical score of 94. "This score is the highest score anyone in the Air Force has received in the past two years," Johnson said.
The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, a civilian agency, also inspected the 97th MDG.
JCAHO looked at nine areas with 163 standards.
They looked at safety, quality of care, treatment and service. The commission focused on issues such as infection control, patient safety, leadership and the way pharmacy medication is managed. JCAHO grades agencies with a pass/fail score, Johnson said.
"We (97th MDG) passed and therefore received their accreditation,"she said.
"Basically, what all this means to our patients is we have a safe environment. We have had 12 inspectors in our facility who looked at all the different areas of the Medical Group and said that we are in compliance. The inspection was a time consuming process, but I think the main thing is the fact it assessed all of our processes to make sure that we are ready, not just for the next inspection but for the next patient," Johnson said.
