ALTUS — In an attempt to raise money to build a summer camp for childen with developmental disabilities, former University of Oklahoma and Miami Dolphins kicking great and director of development for the J.D. McCarty Center, Uwe von Schamann, is bicycling across Oklahoma.

Von Schamann said there are no summer camps in Oklahoma that have been designed and built specifically for children with developmental disabilities, and his participation in this fund-raising event should help promote awareness and hopefully get enough funds to build a facility where about 400 kids a year can attend camp.

The 1,550-mile trek that Von Schamann is currently on across Oklahoma is composed of four legs. He is currently riding on the first leg from Boise City to Idabel. Leg two, which begins in Miami and ends in Hollis, will have Von Schamann in Altus on Oct. 21.

Local businessman and cyclist Norm Weber plans on riding with Von Schamann from Lawton to Altus, and then from Altus to Hollis.

“I encourage everyone to get out and join us as we raise money for this great cause,” Weber said.

Local events to be held in conjunction with the ride will be announced at a later date.

Entry forms to join the ride are available at Jones Bicycle Center, located in the Park Lane Shopping Center.
