ALTUS — In an attempt to raise money to build a summer camp for childen with developmental disabilities, former University of Oklahoma and Miami Dolphins kicking great and director of development for the J.D. McCarty Center, Uwe von Schamann, is bicycling across Oklahoma.

Local businessman and cyclist Norm Weber will ride with Von Schamann from Lawton to Altus on Friday, Oct. 21, and then from Altus to Hollis the next day.

Upon arriving in Altus, Von Schamann will speak at the Altus Kiwanis Club meeting set for noon that day at Western Oklahoma State College.

“The Rotary Club and Lions Club will be there too,” said Weber. “The event is open to the public, but anyone wanting to attend needs to call Brice Sellers ahead of time to make reservations.”

Weber said that the cost of the meal that day will be $6.50 per person, and checks should be made out to the Altus Kiwanis Club.

Von Schamann is making the ride across the state because he said there are no summer camps in Oklahoma that have been designed and built specifically for children with developmental disabilities. His participation in this fund-raising event should help promote awareness and hopefully get enough funds to build a facility where about 400 kids a year can attend camp.

The 1,550-mile trek that Von Schamann is currently on across Oklahoma is composed of four legs. The first leg of the bike ride is from Boise City to Idabel. Leg two, which begins in Miami will end in Hollis on Oct. 22.

“I encourage everyone to get out and join us as we raise money for this great cause,” Weber said.

Local events to be held in conjunction with the ride will be announced at a later date.

Entry forms to join the ride are available at Jones Bicycle Center, located in the Park Lane Shopping Center.
