Altus High Lady Bulldogs head coach Vickie Roop saw it coming and it wasn’t pretty.

Her team took to the court on Tuesday night against a 2-7 team from Vernon, Texas, and the Lady Lions rolled to an easy 66-45 victory.

“I saw it coming,” Roop said. “We had a bad practice on Monday. It just wasn’t very intense. I kept getting on them yesterday and finally I told myself, yeah, I know what’s going to happen tomorrow.”

It was a horrendous start for the Lady Bulldogs who had eight turnovers in their first 11 possessions.

Vernon led at one time in the first quarter 15-2. They were ahead 37-17 at halftime and for all practical purposes the game was over.

Vernon repeatedly got easy shots off the glass beating the Altus defense to the bucket. That was something that Roop had warned her ballclub about prior to the game.

“It happened just exactly as I told them it was going to happen,” said Roop. “They had guards that can lay it up on you left and right and we had designated two kids to be back. But know matter who we stuck in there, you can’t convince them that is what they are supposed to do.”

Altus hit only 12 of 47 shots and they committed 22 turnovers.

The Lady Bulldogs had only one player in double figures. Chelsea Pearson scored 12 points.

Vernon was led by Kelly Clifton who poured in 26 points.

Altus is now 1-2 on the season. They will face Tulsa Hale in the first round of the Lady Bulldog Classic at 8 p.m. Thursday.

Lady Bulldog notes: If there was a bright spot in the game, it was the improved free throw shooting by the Lady Bulldogs. On Friday night Altus hit only 11 of 34 free throw attempts and still defeated Wichita Falls. Tuesday night, Altus was 18 of 28. Roop stressed free throws in practice on Monday. Each player had to make 100 free throws before she could leave practice.
