Wright announces bid for special election

Broadcaster and fourth generation Western Oklahoma native Harold Wright said he plans to run for the District 38 state Senate seat.

Wright and his wife Carol (Roberson), who is a 1967 graduate of Altus High School and the daughter of the late Ivan and Dicy Roberson of the Altus area, said they want to make a difference for Western Oklahoma.

Wright says that if elected, he plans to look for ways to help develop the economy for Western Oklahoma. He said he offers enthusiasm and energy to get things done. He wants to move fast and work for all of Western Oklahoma.

Wright, CEO of Wright Wradio, which operates four radio stations in Western Oklahoma, graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 1971 with a BA degree. He is a past president of the SWOSU Alumni Association.

Wright fulfilled a dream when he purchased his hometown radio station and moved back to Weatherford in 1991. Since then, he has added stations in Clinton and Cordell and now operates four stations in Western Oklahoma. He actively manages Wright Wradio and helps promote community affairs throughout the area. He is a past president of the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters.

Wright has been in Rotary Club 25 years and was president of the Weatherford and Anadarko Rotary Clubs for two terms. He received the Paul Harris Fellow in his honor for outstanding club service. He served as youth exchange officer for District 5740 for three years. Wright was the group study exchange leader to India in 2000.

He is past president of the Anadarko and Weatherford chambers of commerce and served as mayor of Anadarko from 1985 to 1987. He is a past chairman of the Great Plains YMCA and also an Eagle Scout.

Wright is an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Weatherford and has served in several capacities in the Oklahoma Conference of the United Methodist Church. He is currently the Clinton District Lay Leader and is past president of the Oklahoma Methodist Children’s Homes.

He and his wife Carol, a retired school teacher of 29 years, have two children, Angela and Heston. The Wrights have connections in Altus with farming and other properties. Carol’s parents were longtime residents of Jackson County.

The primary election will be April 4 with the general election on May 9.
