ALTUS — Ami Reeves, Oklahoma author and a social worker for the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, will be at the Altus Public Library for two programs on Saturday, March 4. At 10 a.m. she will be discussing her recently released novel “Next of Kin,” a small town murder mystery, and at 1 p.m. she will be conducting a writing workshop.
The Southern Prairie Library System and the Circuit Writers Guild of Altus sponsor both programs. Both programs are free and open to the public.
The Circuit Writers Guild is a new organization for aspiring authors. Launched in September of 2005 by Joyce Smith and Jennie Hawkins, the group’s goal is to inspire writers of all genres to meet their personal writing goals. At the present time the group is six members strong and hoping to expand its membership. They meet on the first Saturday of every month at Highland Heights Methodist Church at 2 p.m. For anyone serious about writing and wanting a place to go for inspiration call Joyce at 482-8230.
The members of the group use various genres in their writing. Linda Willis is currently working on a picture book for young children and she gets her inspiration from writing for her grandchildren. Jennie Hawkins has already had her writing published in health magazines. Daniel Mathewson is currently a reporter for the Altus Times and is working on fiction stories. Erma Manley is interested in mainly memories and nostalgic writing, and Joyce Smith has spent many years as a technical and safety writer. She wants to expand her horizons in the mystery genre. All of the members aspire to getting published in mainstream publishing.
