ALTUS — Ami Elizabeth Reeves, social worker for the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, will be at the Altus Public Library Saturday, March 4 at 10 a.m. to discuss her first novel, “Next of Kin.”

Reeves will also conduct a writing workshop at 1 p.m. for all who are interested in what it takes to write a novel. Both programs are being sponsored by the Southern Prairie Library System and the Circuit Writers Guild of Altus.

"Welcome to Delight, Arkansas, where family secrets are buried so deep, the drinking water’s tainted." Next of Kin is the story of a small town murder mystery and follows Sally Brown, a long distance runner with sights on the U of A’s track team. Arriving unannounced at the home of her estranged sister, Sally receives a chilly reception and a web of secrets. When local reporter Bobbie Lou Voight turns up dead at the Sayer Chicken Company poultry cook-off, everyone in the town is a suspect. As Sally gets closer to the killer, the mystery surrounding her own sheltered childhood keeps an even pace with the race to uncover the culprit.

When asked about her writing and how she got started Reeves said, "I completed my first book in the third grade, fully expecting it to be published. After the disappointment of not finding a market for it, I turned to poetry." Once enrolled at the University of Arkansas she began taking creative writing classes with a focus on poetry. The classes required her to turn in short stories, and "this marked my return to longer works as I fell in love with the process of fiction. I finished a mystery novel at age 23, which is now tucked away in the hall closet."

When Ami is not writing, she is busy with her full time job as a social worker for the Oklahoma Department of Human Services. "I split my time evenly between writing, reading and gardening," Reeves said. She can also eat an entire box of Lucky Charms in one sitting!

Reeves’ review of her book and the writing workshop are open to everyone and are free. For more information, please contact the Altus Public Library at 477-2890.
