It's not often that two teams from the same school have an opportunity to win a state championship, but Altus has that chance this week at the State Class 5A Track Meet.

The meet unfurls at 10 a.m. Friday at Tulsa East Central. It will continue Saturday.

Both the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs have a legitimate shot at bringing home the state title.

It appears like the Bulldogs could be in a dual with Shawnee, McAlester and Ardmore for the state title.

Two years ago coach Jeep Johnson's Bulldogs won the title ahead of the second place Wolves. Last year Shawnee won the title and the Bulldogs were the runners-up.

“It will be a dog fight,” said AHS coach Jeep Johnson. “It could be the closest one in years.”

The Bulldogs will be favored to bring home the gold medal in three events.

Rolando Vasquez, a state champion cross country runner in the fall, is the favorite in both the 1,600-meter run and the 3,200 run. He has recorded the best times in the state in both events including a 4:32.90 in the 1,600 and 9:55.16 in the 3,200.

Marlon Brown ran the fastest time in the state in the 110 hurdles when reeled off a 14.43 at the Altus Invitational.

The Lady Bulldogs should be in a three-way race for the title with host Tulsa East Central and Coweta.

The Lady Bulldogs' strength is the relays. The 400 relay team of Sharonda Lewis, Kiondra Lewis, Dashaniece Harris, and Goldie Traylor have the best recorded time this year in Class 5A at 49.40. The 800-meter relay team composed of Lewis, K. Harris, D. Harris and Mesha Bailey, also has this year's best time at 144.45.

Bailey suffered a hamstring injury early Monday in the 100-meter preliminary in the regional meet and did not run the relay event the finals. She was replaced by Kiondra Harris. However, after suffering the injury she did run and qualify for the state meet in the 200 run and the long jump.
