Recognitions given at school board meeting

ALTUS - Recognition was given to the Regional Coaches of the Year at Tuesday's regular meeting of the Altus School Board.

Recipients were swimming coach Linda Wiginton, athletic director Rick Roof, track coach Jeep Johnson and junior high coach Kelly Cox.

The board accepted the retirements of Janet Diltz and Altha Baker. Also accepted were the resignations of Jaquita Martin, Kathy Scalf and Melba Shrunk. Approval was given of all monthly reports for the treasury, budget expenditures, activity funds and cafeteria funds.

The board approved a resolution to honor the 2006 District Teacher of the Year, June Lee of Altus Junior High. The portable building located at the junior high was declared surplus and sold.

The board approved to rehire the auditing firm of Johnston & Ahlschwede, P.C. for the 2006 audit. The board also approved the district's summer maintenance program and the personnel needed for the projects. The total summer expenditures is $115,967. Work will be done on gym floors, as well as laying of tile and carpet in various areas. Bruce May presented the employment of the extended school year personnel, which the board approved along with the Title I summer school recommendations.

Other summer programs accepted were the Migrant/Even Start/ESL Summer School Program, the Reading Sufficiency Summer Academy, and personnel. Previously bids were taken from two electrical companies to renovate the Eugene Field school. The approval was given by the board to award the electrical contract to Young Electric of Altus in the amount of $78,142.

A contractual agreement between the Altus School District and the Preschool Program and the Southwest Oklahoma Community Action Group Inc. was given full approval allowing the four year old program to include classes to be located at Washington Elementary. The effective date of this agreement shall be for a period beginning Aug. 1, 2006, and ending on May 31, 2007.

Approval was also given to negotiate a purchase price of the Centerpoint Energy Building adjacent to the Board of Education. The building consists of 3,200 square feet, a concrete floor and central heat and air. Board members Darrell Moss and David Walker, along with Superintendent Bob Drury will visit with Centerpoint for negotiations.

Coming out of the executive session were the approvals of proposed new hires and approval of the substitute list. Under new business, approval was given of Cindy Allen as a half time assistant principal and teacher for the alternative school at Altus High School.
