He was born to Santos and Juanita Torres on Aug. 9, 1954. Like his sisters, he was raised and schooled in southwestern Oklahoma. He graduated from Duke High School in 1974. He completed his education at the University of Oklahoma with a BA in political science in 1978 and Juris Doctorate in 1981. Prior to graduating, his law clerk experiences involved working with Western Legal Aid, ORO and as OU's student association chief legal counsel.
He married Marta (Mata) Torres in 1982 in the Blessed Sacrament Church in Lawton. Upon graduation, he served as legal counsel to Gov. George Nigh. He also served as executive officer of Oklahoma County Commissioners Association, the Oklahoma Sheriff Association before joining the Oklahoma City Public School Systems where he served until his death. For him, public service was his calling not just a profession. Whether in his civic, professional or family involvement listening, encouraging and supporting his neighbors and friends was a reflection of his way of giving back.
His wife, children and extended family were a centering priority throughout his life. Well considered and respected by his peers at OKCPS' Webster -- he was never prouder than when his students succeeded and excelled.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his father-in-law, Alberto Gamez Mata.
He is survived by his wife Marta of the home; two children, Christina and Jon Michael Torres; sisters, Mary Faris of Oklahoma City, Aurora Torres-Mach of Hartsells, Ala. and Isabel Hoverman of Dallas. Additional survivors include Lydia and Phillip Easton of Dallas, Sherly and Art Mata and Armando, Antonio and Alberto G. Mata, Jr., all of Lawton.
