ALTUS - Animals of all kinds are taking center stage at the Jackson County Fair. Animals from small to big will be on display during the fair, located at 300 Todd Lane, Sept. 7-9.
The 4-H Hoofbeats Club will be sponsoring an Open Horse Show the Saturday before the fair, Sept. 2. Books open at 8 a.m. For more information contact Dan Meyer at 563-2477 or Shawna Eubanks at 563-9136. This event is also held at the expo center.
Pony rides will be available for small children throughout the fair, sponsored by Red Hills Express, Thursday through Saturday.
The Hoofbeats, 4-H Club will be sponsoring the children's petting zoo. Anyone wishing to bring young or small animals to the zoo can contact the Extension Office at 482-0823.
The judging of rabbits and poultry will take place after 6 p.m. Thursday. These animals need to arrive between 3 and 5 p.m. Thursday.
Do you want to see some intelligent dogs? Come See Kevin Law and his border collies. They will be demonstrating throughout the fair on Thursday at 5 p.m., Friday at 9 a.m. during children's day, and Saturday at noon. These dogs herd and pin sheep and ducks.
The term “slow as a turtle” will not apply to the turtles racing at the fair. The Altus Rotary Club will serve as superintendents of this event to be held Thursday at 5:30 p.m., Friday at 5:30 p.m., and Saturday at 4 p.m. Begin looking for only box turtles; those that have yellow or brown coloring will be allowed to race.
