The Jackson County Republican Party in cooperation with the Oklahoma Republican Women's Club is hosting the first major event of the 2006 campaign season

. The regional event, set for Thursday, Aug. 31, will start at 6 p.m. at the Quartz Mountain State Park Pavilion Number One. Festivities start with a barbecue dinner. The main program for the evening will feature an opportunity to hear from many of the Republican candidates for local, regional and statewide offices. The cost of admission is $10 for adults, $15 per couple or $20 maximum per family and includes the food, plus a pass for miniature golf or a paddle boat ride.

Great Plains Stampede Rodeo will be holding new membership sign-ups Sept. 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the Best Western.

Altus Adult Learning Center is now enrolling for day and evening classes for those interested in adult basic education, G.E.D., family literacy, work-based performance or English as a second language. Call 481-2134 or go by 220 N. Park Lane after 1 p.m.

Altus Firefighters will hold their annual MDA collection drive from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 2, at the corner of Falcon and Main St. and Wal-Mart.

Habitat for Humanity will hold a meeting from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, at the Altus Rotary Center for all interested in becoming a Habitat homeowner. The meeting will present information about Habitat for Humanity Altus Area Inc.

A free prostate cancer screening for men ages 50 and over will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 9, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. A PSA blood test and a digital rectal exam will be performed. No pre-registration required. A community service provided by Dr. M. George Zakhary, JCMH and Southwest Oklahoma Cancer Centers.
