Stone wrote what he called “biographical novels,” books that recount the lives of well-known historical figures. In these novels, Stone interspersed biography with fictional narrative on the psychology and private lives of his subjects. In The Agony and the Ecstasy, Stone brings Michelangelo to life, both the artist and the man. Often referred to as a masterpiece, the novel offers a compelling portrait of Michelangelo's dangerous, impassioned loves and the God-driven fury from which he wrested the some of the greatest art the world has ever known.
Stone spent six years researching this biographical novel. The result is a comprehensive and scholarly work detailing the life and work of Michelangelo, the artist of Sistine Chapel vault and the sculptor of the three Pietas, The David in Florence, the Madonna and Child in Rome's St. Peter's Cathedral. First published in 1961, the novel was re-released in 2004 celebrating the 500th anniversary of Michelangelo's sculpture David which has been on continuous display in Florence, Italy since Michelangelo completed it at the age of 29.
