In the fictional, political drama, “When Evil Prospers,” John Washburn captures reality and fiction. The story takes place after the 2009 presidential elections. The story line follows three main characters: the President, the Governor of Texas and a physician.
In the novel, America faces another terrorist attack, which is just as massive as 9-11, but takes place in Texas. The book also references several current events such as: the War on Iraq, immigration issues faced in the US and the United Nations debate. To grab the attention of readers, Washburn gave the role of the US President to a female. However, this is not the only surprise, Washburn said he left several cliff hangers throughout the book to keep readers thumbing through the pages for more.
“The book addresses a lot of what affects our country,” he said. “Most people are patriotic and love America. We really are all in the same boat. The goal is to keep democracy going and give it to the next generation.”
Washburn began writing the book in 2002, he said he hopes the book will make people want to come together. During the 2000 Presidential Election, he said he saw some nasty things and started seeing a divide in the country, which carried into the election in 2004.
“Politically we have the red states and the blue states, as divided as we are, we can't survive like that. ” he said. “If we don't come together, eventually it will be our demise.”
He is a Family Practice Physician and Captain in the United States Air Force. He and his wife, Juliet have one daughter, Abigail. He grew up in Mississippi and Texas. He is currently stationed at Altus Air Force Base. Although, he is in the military, he said he keeps his career as a writer separate and maintains he does not have a political affiliation.
“I don't want the book to be viewed as my endorsement on any political party,” he said. “I'm a traditionalist. I believe there are good points in both parties, but I am strictly an independent. I'm pro-America. I consider myself a patriot.”
Washburn will hold a book signing in Altus at 2 p.m. on Sat., October 21, at Hastings. For more information about the book and the author visit his website at www.whenevilprospers.com.
