‘Farming, Flying and Community - The Pillars of Southwest Oklahoma'


The Altus Chamber of Commerce will again sponsor Farm City Week from Nov. 6 through Nov. 17. The theme “Farming, Flying and Community - The Pillars of Southwest Oklahoma” will be utilized for all activities.

During this week, the Chamber will take time to recognize the importance of agriculture-related businesses and those involved in farming and ranching. Annually, farming and ranching brings in more than $130 million in revenue to the county.

Activities during the week include a kick-off luncheon and farm tours, a banquet and tours of a cotton gin, peanut warehouse and tractor driving.

WEDNESDAY, Nov. 8. KICK-OFF FARMERS APPRECIATION LUNCHEON AND FARM TOURS. Cost $10 for lunch, and business people are encouraged to bring a farmer to the luncheon. The luncheon will be held at the Altus Community Center located at 401 Falcon Road from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The morning and afternoon FARM TOURS will begin at 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The tour buses will travel to the Cotton Growers Gin, Altus Peanut Warehouse, Robbins' Farming operations, and tractor driving will be provided by Western Equipment at the rodeo grounds.

Mike Adams with AGRI TALK daily farm program will be broadcasting live from Altus KWHW Radio on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 9 and 10.

THURSDAY, Nov. 9. FARM CITY WEEK BANQUET, 6:30 p.m, Altus High School Cafetorium. The special entertainment and speaker is Mike Adams, radio host of daily radio program “Agri-Talk.”

FRIDAY, Nov. 17, This year Col. Carlton “Dewey:” Everhart II will host a FARM CITY WEEK ORIENTATION FLIGHT from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. The base is planning a great flight on a C-17 and/or a KC-135. Invitations are in the mail to farmers and ranchers to participate in the flight.

New this year will be area dairy tours for the civic clubs.

Altus Kiwanis Club, Friday, Nov. 10, Vanderlaan Dairy, Frederick, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Molly Reid, president Altus Rotary Club, Tuesday, Nov. 14, Harmon County Dairy, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Jim Gover, president Altus Noon Lions Club, Thursday, Nov. 16, Machado Dairy, Frederick, from 10:30 a.m. to1:30 p.m.

Tickets are available for the luncheon and banquet at the Altus Chamber of Commerce, local banks and various locations. Call the Altus Chamber at 482-0210 to sign up for the tours and orientation flights.
