Al Terrill, Legislative Consultant for the Oklahoma Retired Educators Association, was guest speaker at a Retired Educators Meeting attended by members from Jackson, Greer, and Kiowa Counties last month. He used the acronym “HELP” to stress legislative goals that included Health Insurance, Equalization, Legislative Adjustments, and Preservation of the Retirement System.

“From the standpoint of the Oklahoma Teacher Retirement System, Oklahoma ranks third from the bottom,” quoted Terrill, a resident of Lawton. “We need the 42,000 recipients of the Oklahoma Teacher Retirement System to help the legislators better understand the issues, so this statistic could be improved.”

Terrill stated that Governor Henry was supportive of this request. The Governor is very concerned about the OTRS unfunded liability and how that has caused the State's bonds to be more expensive.

Another guest at the meeting was Jim Griffin from Weatherford and his wife Twilla. Griffin is the district representative for the organization. He invited the members to attend a district meeting at Hobart on March 16.

Jackson County Secretary Suzie Roberson led the group in a SW Oklahoma rain experience as an energizer exercise.

Jackson County Retired Educators President Ida Fay Winters presided at the meeting attended by 39 persons.

Earl Booker, Karan Garrett and Polly Benedict conducted an election for the Very Important Member award from nominees Grace Dempsey and Allene Martin, both from Altus, and LaHoma Simpson of Tipton. Mrs. Martin won the honor and will complete the nomination to the state office.

Guests from the surrounding counties of Greer and Kiowa were thanked for their attendance. Committee reports were given by the chairmen.

The next Jackson County Retired Educators Unit meeting will be Thursday, Nov. 16, which is the Oklahoma Statehood Day. The Retired Educators will be celebrating the Centennial celebration with the naming of the Pioneer Educator awards on Thursday. These are members who have reached the age of ninety years and who are still active members of the organization.

The location of the Nov. 16 meeting will be the Tamarack Assisted Living Center, 1224 E. Tamarack, Altus. The meal, hosted by the Tamarack Assisted Living Center, will start at 11:30 a.m.
