Altus man dies in one-vehicle accident

LONE WOLF - Charlie J. Gibson, 81,of Altus, died Tuesday in a one-vehicle accident near Lone Wolf.

According to reports, Gibson was driving a 2004 Chevrolet 1/2 ton pickup southbound 10.5 miles south of Lone Wolf on State Highway 44 in Kiowa County Tuesday morning when he ran off the right side of the roadway and stuck a concrete bridge abutment. Why Gibson ran off the road is unknown.

He suffered head, leg and trunk internal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the medical examiner.

No other vehicles or passengers were involved in the accident.

Seatbelts were equipped but not in use. Airbags were equipped but not deployed.

Investigating the accident was Trooper Mike Strain of the Kiowa County detachment, assisted by Trooper Tyler Shelby of the Greer County detachment, Trooper Tommy Pogue of the Jackson County detachment, Cpt. Johnny Freeman, Greer County EMS, Greer County Sheriff's office, Kiowa County Sheriff's office and the Lone Wolf Police Department.

Funeral services for Gibson are pending with Lowell-Tims Funeral Home in Altus.
