GMH Military Housing (GMH) is committed to making Altus AFB family housing a place where residents will be proud to call home. With Altus AFB, The Department of the Air Force and Congress behind them, GMH is ready to take over the operations of family housing on Feb. 6.

In celebration of this momentous occasion, GMH is throwing a Grand Opening “New Year Party” for all family housing residents on February 6, 2007 at Freedom Hall. The complementary sandwiches and activities planned can be enjoyed by all ages.

“We are ready to take over”, says Jackye Sanders, Community Manager for GMH, “it's time to put our plan into action”.

GMH and partners, The Benham Companies (architect and engineering) and Hensel Phelps Construction Company, plan to continue the current housing efforts at Altus AFB and add housing to provide an improved community environment. In addition, GMH will strive to improve maintenance operations.

The plan for family housing at Altus involves new construction, renovations, and general community upgrades. Approximately 395 existing homes will be demolished, 158 new state-of-the-art homes will be constructed and 385 existing homes will be fully renovated.

The new homes planned for at Altus are distinctive to each neighborhood. GMH has developed different house plans based upon grade and number of bedrooms. All new homes are three and four bedroom duplexes and single family homes with one and two car oversized garages. Each new home will also feature fenced back yards, additional off street guest parking and safe rooms.

While the new construction takes place, renovations to existing housing are designed to enhance the quality of the homes and bring them to adequate condition. The targeted renovations will also help to preserve the homes until replacements are built. It is GMH's intent to provide quality improvements for the families residing in these older homes comparable to those generated in new homes.

However, building new homes and renovating existing homes to current standards is only the first step in transforming family housing at Altus AFB into a quality residential community. GMH believes adding the right mixes of neighborhood amenities and neighborhood activity centers are a critical second step. A new Community Center featuring a business center, meeting rooms and the GMH Management Offices will be built in the old Bicentennial area. The neighborhood amenities consist of a new swimming pool, neighborhood picnic areas, 7 new tot lots, 5 new play lots, covered seating areas at playground, basketball and volleyball courts and a new trail system throughout the neighborhoods.

Family housing residents will get more than just a party when GMH takes over. Immediate improvements will be made to the existing homes and communities. Landscaping will be upgraded, trees trimmed and shrubbery pruned, flowerbed created at designated common areas, planted surfaces edged and leaves and debris cleaned up. GMH will mow all lawns throughout the community (excluding fenced yards) and common areas to ensure all grass surfaces are maintained and to reflect a clean, consistent contour throughout the community.

“We look to give the residents an immediate boost, give their communities and homes an immediate facelift and let them know that we want to get down to the business and begin building a new life for the families at Altus Air Force Base”, said Jackye Sanders, Community Manager for GMH.

Recreation areas maintained by GMH will be painted, planted, damaged benches replaced, repaired, missing or deteriorated common area trash receptacles replaced, inadequate or inoperative lighting replaced, playground equipment and associated fixtures repaired or replaced. Additional benches will be added to recreation areas.

As of Feb. 6, family housing residents will contact GMH Management Office at 580 379-4002 for housing issues, resident questions and planned events. The GMH Maintenance Facility will handle maintenance problems and work orders and can be contacted at 580 482-0073 or at the website address www.altusfamilyhousing.com.

GMH welcomes anyone with questions or interested in family housing to contact the GMH Community Management Office at 580-379-4002.
