She was born Sept. 23, 1936, to E.B. and Juanita (Scruggs) Gardner in Tucson, Ariz. She was raised in Southwest Oklahoma. She married Robert Lloyd Barber on May 18, 1956. He preceded her in death on June 19, 1995. With Robert in the U.S. Air Force and a member of the U.S. Border Patrol, they lived in many places and made many moves. They moved back to Southwest Oklahoma in 1987 to enjoy their retirement, but Shirley worked several years as an automation clerk for Airlift Training in Civil Service before her full retirement. Gardening, golf and reading were some of her hobbies, but being the “Nintendo Grandma Queen” and spending time with her family and friends were her favorite pastimes.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a son-in-law, Rick Howell in 2006.
She is survived by three children, Jo Brazell of Blair, Jamie Howell of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Robert Barber Jr. and wife Josie of Morristown, Tenn.; one sister, Nema Walker and husband Johnie of Blair; one brother, Bob Gardner and wife Claudine of Grove; five grandchildren, Carter Brazell of Travis AFB, Calif., Shonda Brazell of Blair, Sarah Howell of New Orleans, Robert Barber and Brandy Barber of Morristown, Tenn., along with many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Randy Mitchell officiating. Private inturnment services will follow at a later date under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
The family will greet friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
