Altus woman dies in weekend accident

Aruna Patel, 55, of Altus, died as the result of an automobile accident on U.S. Highway 62 in Tillman County Sunday.

According to reports from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the accident happened 12 miles east of Altus at 3:45 a.m. when a GMC Z71 pickup driven by Sonal Suan, 29, of Altus, hit a patch of ice and lost control and struck a bridge rail. The vehicle came to rest on the roadway facing south.

A 2003 Cadillac Escalade driven by Rico J. DaCamon, 23, of Altus, seeing the pickup at the last minute, applied brakes and struck the pickup broadside.

DaCamon was transported to Jackson County Memorial Hospital by State Troopers where he was treated and released with arm injuries.

Suan was taken to JCMH by Jackson County EMS where she was treated for trunk, internal and head injuries and then transported to Comanche County Memorial Hospital in Lawton. She has been reported to be in stable condition.

Passengers Patel and Beatrice Moncada, were both taken to JCMH by Jackson County EMS.

Patel was later transported to the OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City with head and trunk injuries and was listed in serious condition. She died at 10:10 a.m. Sunday from injuries sustained in the accident.

Moncada, 44, of Altus, was taken to JCMH by Jackson County EMS where she was treated and released for trunk, internal and arm injuries.

The accident was investigated by Trooper Gary Sanders of the Tillman County detachment of Troop M and assisted by Trooper Steve Pothorst of the Jackson County detachment.
