Vernon was born Sept. 17, 1926, to Jerry and Ethel Harris in Tatum, where he attended and graduated school. He met and married his wife Cassie Mae Harris of 50 years in Altus. He attended Pilgrim Baptist Church in Tatum and was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Altus.
Vernon lived in Altus for more than 50 years where he worked at the Altus Compress for more than 20 years. He also worked as a farmer and a cook. His favorite interests were watching the westerns on television, fishing, playing his guitar, walking and visiting his friends and family.
Vernon is survived by four sons, Vernon Harris Jr. and wife Barbara of Wichita, Kan., Daniel Harris and wife Teresa, also of Wichita, A.H. Harris of Altus, and Benny Lee Harris of Wichita; six daughters, Cassie Graham and husband Carl Graham of Fort Bragg, N.C., Pansy Lenard and husband John Lenard of Altus, Daisy Fleming and spouse William Cherry of Altus, Vivian Felder and husband Arthur Felder of Birmingham, Ala., Virginia Washington and spouse Sylvester Branch of Altus, and Winona Harris and spouse Kirk Hall of Altus; 30 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; one sister, Savannah McGee of Tatum; two brothers, Bennie Eddie Harris of Caruthersville, Mo., and Grady Harris of Oklahoma City; his Macedonia Baptist Church family and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Vernon was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Cassie Mae Harris in 1996; his mother and father; a daughter; two sons; and five brothers.
Services have been scheduled for 2 p.m., Saturday at the Macedonia Baptist Church. Pastor Kenneth Broughton will officiate. Interment will follow in the Altus City Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
