An Altus man, who works at Wal-Mart, had just left work around 8 p.m. Friday night when he left the roadway and hit a parked truck. The van he was driving flipped and he was partially ejected, and then pinned underneath. According to reports, Burk Basaldua of Altus, had a history of seizures, and may have had one which caused his fatal accident. “There were yawl marks indicating that he (Basaldua) was swerving left to right before he left the roadway,” said Altus Police Chief Mike Patterson. Patterson said that Basaldua was traveling south on Main Street when he left the roadway to the east, hitting a parked pickup in the Hastings parking lot. The van he was driving then flipped, partially ejecting him and pinning him underneath. Basaldua was pronounced dead at the scene. In a related incident, a pedestrian, who was said to be a relative of Basaldua, was in the parking lot shortly after his accident and was hit by a moving vehicle. She was taken to Jackson County EMS to Jackson County Memorial with non-life threatening injuries. In an unrelated accident Friday at about 6:30 p.m., a 63-year-old man from Bridgeport, Texas, was northbound on a county road one mile north of Reed in Greer County when he was struck in the drivers door by another vehicle and was killed. According to reports, Tommy Marshall was driving a 2003 GMC pickup northbound on a county road when Jeremy Kendall, 31, of Mangum, was driving a 2005 Dodge pickup eastbound on a county road and struck him. Marshall was extricated from his vehicle by the Mangum Fire Department, and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Greer County EMS. Seatbelts were equipped in both vehicles, but were not in use in the Kendall vehicle. Kendall was ejected from his vehicle, but injuries were not known at the time of the report. The accident was investigated by Trooper Tyler Shelby of the Greer County detachment, and was assisted by Trooper Dirk Hamon, Lt. George Dickerson, Trooper Ryan Hayes of the Harmon County detachment, Lt. Tom Pogue, Trooper Steve Pothorst, Trooper James Wallace and Trooper Chris Sherman, all of the Jackson County detachment, as well as being assisted by the Mangum Fire Department, Greer County Sheriff’s Office, Mangum Police, Greer County EMS and the Reed Fire Department.
