The Shortgrass Institute will be offering two art classes in December, Prismacolor Drawing for Teens with Synott Matthews and Monotype Printmaking for Adults with Bobby Avila. Both of the workshops will be held at the Altus Public Library, 421 North Hudson.

The teen class is $25 and the adult class is $30. All materials will be provided for both classes.

Synott Matthews is from Mangum and was an educator in the Mangum schools for many years. Quite a few of his students have gone on to become nationally recognized artists. In his workshop, teens will work with colored pencils and watercolor to develop their artistic skills. The class is open to teens in grades 7 through 12. The workshop is Dec.5, 6, 8 and 9, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Avila is an art teacher at the Altus High School. His workshop on Monotype Printmaking is only the second time he has offered it with the Institute. For those of us who do not know what monotype printmaking here is a brief description. Monotype printmaking consists of inking a Plexiglas plate, creating an image by removing the ink and then transferring the image to paper. Sounds like fun and a very creative way to make art. The workshop is Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday Dec. 12, 13, and 15 from 6 to 9 p.m.

All of the art workshops are partially funded by the Oklahoma Arts Council. For more information on either of the workshops or to reserve a seat, call the library at 477-2890.
