Mike Bennett, 88, formerly of Altus, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009, at the Thomas E. Creek VA Medical Center in Amarillo, Texas. Graveside services with Military Honors will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home.

Mike was born on May 10, 1920, to Thomas and Anner (Waldrip) Bennett in Yarnaby. He attended Friendship School. He served in the United States Army during WWII. He was wounded in Germany and received a Purple Heart and two Bronze Service Stars. After being honorably discharged in 1945, Mike worked as a civilian cook at the Amarillo Air Force Base. Mike lived in Rogers, Ark., and Springdale, Ark., before moving to Altus in 1998. He returned to Amarillo in 2002. He was a Life Member of the Springdale Moose Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Robert Bennett, Dee Bennett, Tom Bennett and J.C. Bennett; and one sister, Lilly Petzold.

Mike is survived by one daughter, Floye McCoun and husband Billy of Amarillo; two sons, Michael Dee Bennett of Vancouver, Canada, and Monty Bennett and wife Chris of Kansas City, Mo.; one sister, Faye Jones of Altus; a sister-in-law, Goldie Bennett of Altus; a brother-in-law, Ervin Petzold of Altus; his special friends, John and Gwynn Paver of Amarillo and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

The family request memorial donations be made to the Thomas E. Creek VA Medical Center Alzheimer’s Unit, 6010 Amarillo Blvd. W., Amarillo, Texas 79106.

The family will receive guests for a visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. today at Kincannon Funeral Home. Online tributes may be sent to www.kincannonfuneralhome.com.
