LAWTON - A fourth quarter flurry sparked the Altus High Lady Bulldogs to a 39-33 victory over the Lawton MacArthur Highlanders on Friday night.

Unfortunately the Bulldogs weren’t as fortunate losing to the Highlanders 68-43.

The Lady Bulldogs-Lady Highlander contest was a game of spurts. An 8-0 run by AHS in the second period sparked the Lady Bulldogs to a 20-10 halftime lead.

But that lead didn’t last. A 11-1 spree by the Lady Highlanders tied the game 21-21 late in the third period.

A pair of free throws by Mahogany Nelms gave Altus the lead at 23-21 heading into the final quarter.

MacArthur scored six of the first eight points of the fourth quarter to regain the lead at 27-25.

But the Lady Highlanders didn’t score for the next four minutes and the Lady Bulldogs took full advantage of that.

A three-pointer by Tatyana Bell gave Altus the lead for good at 28-27. The Lady Bulldogs scored 11 unanswered points to take a 36-27 margin and that was too much for MacArthur to overcome.

Ebony Nelms led Altus in scoring with 14 points. Bell and Mahogany Nelms scored seven points each.

In the boys game, MacArthur (11-11) scored the first 11 points of the game and that set the tone for the contest.

Altus was led in scoring by Mason Maahs and Patrick McNeal who had 11 points each.

The games signaled the end of the regular season for the Altus teams. They now turn their attention to the Class 5A Regional Basketball Tournament. The Lady Bulldogs (14-8) will travel to Del City on Thursday for a first round game with Oklahoma City Northwest Classen. Tip off will be at 6:30 p.m.

The Bulldogs (3-19) will journey to Oklahoma City for a first round match up with Bishop McGuiness at the McGuiness. It is slated for an 8 p.m. tipoff.
