A deadly winter storm that left thousands of homes and businesses without electricity, made travel precarious and forced the closure of schools and offices across the state, finally moved out of Oklahoma early today.

The National Weather Service canceled winter weather advisories after the final waves of sleet, snow and freezing rain tracked out of the state Tuesday night.

In the Altus area, there were a few minor automobile accidents due to icy road conditions, and four accidents with injury were reported.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol was busy with vehicles running off the roads Monday night and Tuesday, but reported a very quiet Tuesday night. Altus Police also reported a quiet evening.

Altus Schools, Western Oklahoma State College and most area school districts closed both Tuesday and today because of hazardous driving conditions.

The two-day storm came about 13 months after a massive ice storm devastated much of Oklahoma, killing nearly 30 and knocking out power to more than 500,000 homes and businesses for days.

This system wasn’t as bad as that, but it still created driving conditions that led to at least 1,000 weather-related collisions, including two fatal across the state.
