On Friday, May 4, Barney Trammell, BNSF Grain Elevator Facilities and Merchandising Manager, reported that three loads of wheat have been processed, as the first in the state. The wheat is from Tommy Pamlan’s fields in Crowell, Texas. The weight of the wheat is 61.5 which, according to Trammell, makes it number one grade wheat, with low dockage. The protein level was 13.5. Cutting was to begin on Friday in the Eldorado area, Trammell stated.
The wheat being shown cut here on Thursday belongs to Murray, Eddie and Rann Williams. The field is located at “9-Mile Hill” (junction of Hwy 283 and Hwy 5 south of Altus). It was harvested by Kevin Cole & Sons. Test weight was 58 lbs./bu. Moisture content was 10.9%. The field produced approximately 31 bu/acre.
This may be the earliest that wheat has been harvested in Jackson County.
