Margaret attended Altus schools and Cameron Altus Junior College and was a member of Alpha Theta sorority.
Margaret married Leon Smith on Oct. 12, 1941, and supported him in establishing the Gate City Dairy Bar on the Altus square.
Margaret was a valuable and active member of the Altus community giving back in many ways. She was active in the First Methodist Church attending as a youth and later teaching pre-school Sunday school and assisting with Vacation Bible School. Margaret was as a member of Circle I Devoted Methodist Women. She was also a charter member and past president of Aldonian Club, Past Regent of Ann Lee Chapter of D.A.R. and was a Girl Scout leader for many years where she taught at their camp. She was secretary of the Altus Chamber of Commerce, the Civic Trust Fund and the United Fund. Professionally, Margaret worked in retail sales at the Sharon Shop and Holsley’s Ladies Wear.
One of the characteristics Margaret will be most remembered for her sense of style and grace, always beautifully and elegantly dressed.
Margaret Gibbons Smith is survived by her daughter, Diane Allgood her husband Ron Allgood of Altus; grandchildren, Whitney Allgood of Oklahoma City and John Allgood of Oklahoma City; great-grandchildren, Jordan and Jillian Allgood of Oklahoma City; and brother, Harold Gibbons and wife Joan of Santa Fe, N.M.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leon Smith; and brothers, Gregory and Dick.
Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday at 1 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Altus, officiated by the Rev. David Player. Burial will be in the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
