Darlene was born July 22, 1965, to Wanda Lenard, in Hollis. Darlene spent much of her youth attending the Oklahoma School for the Deaf in Sulphur. For the last seven years, she worked at the Department of Human Services as a custodian. She took pride in her job and enjoyed going to work and associating with her co-workers at DHS and Southwest Enterprises.
Since her childhood, Darlene enjoyed participating in the Special Olympics and was awarded many medals and ribbons. Darlene loved to dance, listen to loud music, and be around her friends. Those who knew her fondly recall her infectious laugh and her always present smile.
As Darlene bravely approached death, she drew comfort from Jesus’ promise that by means of God’s kingdom all those asleep in death will receive a resurrection. She frequently referred to her favorite scripture in Isaiah 35:5 — “At that time the eyes of the blind ones will be opened, and the very ears of the deaf ones will be unstopped.” Darlene enjoyed studying the Bible and regularly attended the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Darlene is survived by her mother, Wanda Smith; her brothers, Kevin Lenard and Richard Smith; many aunts, uncles, nieces, a nephew, and cousins. Darlene will be missed by her good friend Norma and all the others whose lives she touched and enriched.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Lowell-Tims Chapel with Ray Jolin officiating. Interment will follow at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
