A luncheon was held at the Pantry, Saturday, June 23, honoring Maria Gover, who has reached the exalted position of being a 50-year member of P.E.O. This philanthropic organization dating from 1869, is dedicated to the advancement of education for women. Maria was one of the organizers of Duke P.E.O. Chapter GU, founded in 1999, and has been an inspiration and guiding light ever since. She is truly a “Golden Girl”.

President Edna Thompson greeted members and guests and introduced longtime friend Gayle Ledbetter, who spoke of Maria’s many accomplishments with a touch of humor. She then presented Maria with flowers and a silver book marker. Joan Wycoff read an original poem based on the song, “I Just Met a Girl Named Maria”, about Maria and P.E.O. Everyone knows Maria is such a stickler for protocol, and read another humorous poem about keeping up with her P.E.O. pen.

Chapter GU is forever indebted to its many members, like Maria, who through their influence, willingness to work, unfailing attendance, and dedication have made us a progressive, growing organization. We can truly say to Maria, “Thanks for the memories.”
