‘Women In Agriculture’ and annual ‘Winter Conference’ set at SWTC Feb. 25 & 26

Accordinig to Extension educator Gary Strickland, there are two agriculture meetings of benefit coming up.

The first is the “Women in Agriculture Conference’ set for Wednesday, Feb. 25, and the second is the annual “Winter Ag Conference’ set for Thursday, Feb. 26. Both meetings will be held at Southwest Technology Center.

The Women in Agriculture Conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with topics including Womens Health Issues, Womens Insurance Needs, Going Green, and Wind, Oil, and Gas Leases. There will also be a panel of women who own their own business as well as mini-mall shopping booths.

Those in attendance will also have the opportunity to be drawn for door prizes and two grand prizes. This should be an informative, useful, and fun conference for ladies involved in agriculture type enterprises. There will be a lunch served during the conference. Jackson County’s Annual Winter Ag Conference is scheduled for the day after the Women in Ag Conference on Feb. 26. It will also be held at the Southwest Technology Center, Seminar Center from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. This annual agriculture conference has been conducted for the past 5 years covering numerous topics. This year’s conference promises to be both useful and informative. The conference will be divided into three sessions with the following topics.

Session one Topics – “Current Research Work in Jackson County/SW-OK”

(8:30 – 10:30 a.m.)

• N-Sensor Work in Cotton - This presentation will look at current work with the nitrogen sensor in cotton production scenarios and how it might be utilized.

• Tillage and Cropping Systems Study Results - This presentation will look at the current results of a seven year long term dryland study involving both no-till and conventional till practices with seven cropping systems in each tillage practice.

• Fertilizer and Chicken Litter Use – This presentation will consider the use of chicken litter and its comparison with commercial fertilizer sources. The benefits and concerns that should be considered and some current work that is being initiated in Jackson County.

• Southwest Research and Extension Center Cotton Program Update – This presentation will look at both new and ongoing cotton programs at the Research and Extension Center.

Session Two Topics – “Agriculture Production Alternatives in SW-OK”

(10:40 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.)

• Sunflowers and other oil seed crops – This presentation will look primarily at the production and management areas associated with Sunflowers and then other oil seed crop possibilities.

• Sweet Sorghums – Test Results, Potential Use, and Livestock Use: This presentation will discuss the recent test results form sweet sorghum plantings, their Potential Use, and how they could be used in a Livestock Feeding Program.

• Wind Energy Production and Leases – This area will look at what is involved in establishing a wind energy production location on a producer and the leases or contracts involved.

Session Three Topic – Commodity Markets, Farm Transitions, and Legislative Update

(1 – 3 p.m.)

• Grains Market

• Livestock Market

• Farm Transitions Conferences (What are they about and When/Where are They)

• State Legislative Update with our State Legislators Senator Mike Schulz and Rep. Charles Ortega.

As you can see if will be a full day with a lot of information. There will be several State Extension Specialists present as well as Local and Area Extension Staff to give presentations and/or lead discussions. Producers are encouraged to attend the entire day but may also attend segments specific to their interest. There will be a sponsored lunch served during the day with a Lunch Time Speaker addressing the Latest Farm Bill.
