Despite drought, some area cotton still thriving

Current drought conditions have caused many cotton farmers to give up on their crop this year, but there are those areas where some of the crop is still thriving. For instance, in Oklahoma in southern Kiowa County approximately four miles west of Snyder along four lane H62 are two fields of good cotton. One is a dryland field in a creek bottom on the north side of the highway; the other, irrigated by a pivot system, is on the south side of the road.
Two Oklahoma cotton farmers were among a group of 11 producers from Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas chosen to see cotton operations in Tennessee, Missouri, Arkansas and Mississippi by the National Cotton Council’s Producer Information Exchange program.
Adam Bohl, Chattanooga, and Derrick Burnam, Mangum, traveled through the states examining cotton poduction methods in a program sponsored by Bayer CropScience through a grant to The Cotton Foundation. The program is in its 24th year. (National Cotton Council)
Disaster legislature may be considered by House Republican leaders as reports of the drought’s devastating impact covering much of the US intensify. House leaders, who have been reluctant to schedule consideration of the comprehensive farm legislation approved by the Agriculture Committee on a strong bipartisan vote, also are increasingly reluctant to send members home for the August recess without addressing growing losses.
