Longtime Altus resident, Dorothy Sharpe, passed away peacefully from this life into the next on Tuesday morning, Aug. 7, 2012, in Oklahoma City.

Dorothy was born on June 6, 1927, in Portland, Ore. Shortly afterward her family moved to San Antonio, Texas, where she spent the majority of her younger years. Dorothy was a graduate of Trinity University, and later, from the Worden School of Social Services at Our Lady of the Lake University. After receiving her Master’s Degree in Social Work, she continued developing her craft in jobs with the Henry Street Settlement House in New York City, the Menniger Clinic in Houston, and Catholic Charities worldwide. During this time she met and married fellow social worker and longtime Altusian, O.W. Sharpe. Sadly, she was widowed in 1981. Her life afterward was remarkably full and productive. She raised her son and did the work she loved in the community that loved her in return. She was an active member of St. Paul’s Epicopal Church and enjoyed the friendship extended to her there for many years. In January 2012, Dorothy moved to Oklahoma City to live with her son and his family after being diagnosed with the illness that would take her life. She died with her family, knowing that she was loved.

Dorothy is survived by her son, Steve Sharpe and daughter-in-law Mary (Murphy) Sharpe of Oklahoma City; granddaughter, Katelin Murphy of Fort Worth, Texas; nephew, Mark Shepherd and financee Vickie Bryant of Amarillo, Texas; great-nieces, Kristen Shepherd Clark and her husband Charlie of Amarillo, and Kaylee Shepherd of Amarillo; niece, Nancy Warren and her husband David of Federicksburg, Va.; great-niece, Jessica Warren; and great-nephews, Jeremy and Rusty Warren, also of Fredericksburg.

In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Memorial Fund.
