A good defensive effort and a good performance from their post players sparked the Altus High Lady Bulldogs to an easy 42-23 victory over the Lawton MacArthur Lady Highlanders here on Friday.
The smallish Lady Highlanders had no answer for the Lady Bulldogs post players Meagan Steen (6-3) and Taren Ray (6-0). Both Steen and Ray scored 14 points each to lead the Lady Bulldogs.
MacArthur struggled on offense, partly because of the Altus defense and partly because the Highlanders couldn’t hit shot. The Lady Highlanders missed their first 15 shots of the game and made only one of 17 opportunities in the first half, They finished the game by hitting only eight of 42 shots.
Altus scored the first 10 points of the game and the Lady Bulldogs never looked back.
Altus finished the regular season with a 15-6 record. They will travel to Ada on Thursday to play Ardmore in the first round. Tip off is set for 6:30 p.m.
It was the final game for eight seniors including Steen, Ray, Malorie Vaughan, Michelle Marcha, Kiondra Harris, Olivia Bonner, Jozalyn Ward and Amnia Plair.
“It’s a tough time emotionally,” AHS coach David Prickett said. “It’s the last time for them to play here in the big house. All of the girls gave a big effort, Their pretty special with what they accomplished last year and the way they played this year. Hopefully we’ll continue to go further and further. They’ve established some things that we tried to instill in them, always playing hard with great effort with a great attitude. I’m really proud of them. We developed good relationships with the girls. It’s hard to see them go.”
