After a slow start the Altus High Bulldogs turned it around and dominated the Elk City Elks in a controlled scrimmage here on Friday night.

When it was over Altus outscored the visitors six touchdowns to two.

The scrimmage began in a rapid fire format in which the ball placed on the plus side of fifty at the 40 yard line. The teams also began some series at the 20.

During that portion of the scrimmage Elk City hit a pair of touchdown passes on the first series but after that it was all Bulldogs.

On its first series, Altus scored three times, twice through the air. Senior quarterback Brantley Ford threw a four yard TD pass to Diquon Woodhouse and a 16 yard scoring strike to Montel Vidot. Woodhouse also scored on a four yard run.

On the next go round, Ford found a wide open Kasen Warren for a 25 yard touchdown pass. Mathew Hawkins also had five yard scamper for a score in that series.

The scrimmage then was sent to game like situations where the clock was set at 15 minutes and ran continuously.

Elk City mounted a drive but missed on a field goal attempt.

Altus drove deep into Elks territory but suffered a set back because of a penalty that left them with a second and 27 situation from the 32. Woodhouse then took over. He received the hand off from Ford, started right but cut back up the middle with a burst of speed that ended in a 32 yard TD scamper. Michael Perez kicked the extra point and Altus led 7-0n with 30 seconds in the first half.

The teams were scheduled to play another 15 minute half but Elk City coaches told AHS coach Chad Stone they had plenty of reps and wanted to end the scrimmage.

“What that a tribute to is our strength and conditioning program,” Stone said. “Our kids were pumped up, they could have played another four quarters. These kids have worked really hard and they love to compete. Coach Rollins (assistant coach Josh Rollins) has a done a marvelous job in the weight room.”

After the Elks two early touchdowns, Altus rallied and that was something that didn’t surprise Stone.

“We knew we would settle in and once we did we played pretty well offensively and defensively,” Stone said. “We’re happy with where we are at up and down the board.”

Altus rushed 22 for 146 yards. The leader was Woodhouse who had eight carries for 73 yards.

Ford was very effective in the passing game going 8-11 for 121 yards , three touchdowns and one interception.

The AHS freshmen were very dominate in the their scrimmage with the Elks

They outscored Elk City 5-0.

Six-foot 200 pound running back Taven Birdow had touchdown runs for 13, five and 25 yards. Jayden Benway scored on a five yard run and DeAnte Harris had a 40 yard scamper for a score.

The Altus junior varsity outscored Elk City four to three.

Tanner Stewart scored on a five yard run. Tanner Cross tallied two TDs on runs of 25 and 15 yards and T.J. McGill rambled 20 yards for a score.

The Altus freshman will host Vernon, Texas Thursday at 5 p.m. The two junior teams will follow at 7 p.m.

The Altus varsity opens its season Friday night at Vernon. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
