ALTUS – The Fraternal Order of Eagles welcomes members of the Altus community to attend a special meeting Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m., at Val’s Restaurant & Pub, located at 800 N. Main St., to discuss the institution of a new F.O.E. Aerie & Auxiliary.
Since 1898, The Fraternal Order of Eagles has been working tirelessly to better communities across the United States and Canada and uphold the belief that people can make a difference in the lives of others. Our motto, “People Helping People,” is one the organization strives to live up to each and every day to the tune of nearly $10 million in annual charitable contributions to local, national and international groups.
Their Charity Foundation provides assistance and research dollars to institutions related to diabetes, heart disease, cancer, kidney disease, spinal cord injuries, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, child abuse prevention and more.
In 2008, the F.O.E. made a five-year, $25-million commitment to fund The Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center at the University of Iowa. The center will feature leading research in the field of diabetes, using endowed funds contributed by Eagles everywhere to make breakthroughs in diabetes care in hopes of one day finding a cure. To date, donations made by the Eagles total $15 million and have already been used to fund significant breakthroughs in the field.
American icons such as Jimmy Durante, Bob Hope, Babe Ruth, Tony Orlando, Gordie Howe and Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Warren G. Harding, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan were all members of the F.O.E.
With their influence and the help of our dedicated membership, Eagles founded Mother’s Day and Social Security, ended job discrimination with the Jobs After 40 Program and fought to preserve the right to publicly display the Ten Commandments.
Currently, their organization offers all police, firefighters, EMTs, and inactive military a free year of membership with the F.O.E. through our Those Who Serve Program. We also assist U.S. and Canadian troops annually through our Operation Eagle program, which provides nominated Eagles or children of Eagles serving overseas with much needed food and supplies during the holiday season.
When a neighbor is sick or grieving or simply in need of a helping hand, the Fraternal Order of Eagles is there to help. Their Memorial Foundation has provided medical and educational benefits to the children of members who die while performing their job or serving their country since World War II.
